A new church has recently been planted and has started to meet regularly. There is an appointed pastor of the church and a small group of people who meet regularly to plan worship and to make necessary decisions. As the church has grown, many have started to feel like the small group of people has too much power in the church and doesn’t reflect the variety of perspectives of the growing congregation.
Although largely unspoken, behind the scenes there have been several personal confrontations about the power of the small group. There is an increasing sense of division in the church that has not been formally addressed or talked about.
Questions: Was it better for people to confront the issue behind the scenes rather than have an open conversation? If so, why? How can members focus on core issues rather than personalities?
